Visiting Ouro Preto comes level with a travel through time. In the 18th century Brazil was influenced very strongly by the gold rush in Minas Gerais. In its booming time, Ouro Preto counted 100.000 inhabitants and thus was the largest city of south-america. Everybody gathered at the rivers and mine sites from where the fabulous wealth was flowing. Ouro Preto is a jewel of portugese colonial architecture with  a beautiful baroque church. Due to its importance considering history and beauty, in 1980 it already was declared as a world-memorial city as well as a world-cultural-heritage by the UNESCO. The church São Francisco de Assis, with its painted wooden and soapstone carvings, is the most important project by Aleijadinho ( brazilian church architect and sculptor. Don't miss out on a city-tour which takes you for example to another "golden" church "Nossa senhora do pilar", the oldest theater in latin-america dating 1770 (Casa da Ópera), and the musuem of  oratorios, besides many other sights. Another musuem informs you about Brazil's diverse mineral resources and besides that other geological sights from all over the world are illustrated.
