Manaus is the capital of the Federal State Amazonas, but the city is not located on the identically named river but on the Rio Negro. About 18 km in southeasterly direction the great “Meeting of the waters” is taking place: Rio Negro's dark coloured water meets Rio Solimoes and after a few kilometres the waters merge to an new, unique colour.  

The Amazon-jungle is a wild paradise. The impenetrably, primeval forest, still untouched in most parts, is home to unique wildlife and vegetation which is incredibly rich in species. Numerous species of mammals and more than 250 species of birds , as well as cayman, turtles, snakes, frogs and fish indicate this absolutely amazing ecosystem. Besides that, the many rivers which split up into countless small canals and rapids, are very impressive. Bizarre looking sandbanks and river-bays are being formed, and every visitor of this region will be left with amazement.
